Brown Girls Guide to Bold Hues This Spring
I can’t count how many times growing up I was told I shouldn’t wear something simply because of the color or my skin. It’s an issue many brown girls face and in recent years have been able to combat.
Much of this resurgence of confidence can be attributed to one actress in particular. The beautiful powerhouse, we know as the indomitable Lupita Nyong’o has been an active force when it comes to wearing what she wants, not only in the types of garments but with hues as well. I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I look forward to seeing what bold pieces she’ll wear during award season or on the cover a magazine spread. Her style choices have inspired a wave of bold hues amongst us brown girls!
Here’s a quick guide to mastering these looks for yourself.
Find colors that work! When it comes to pairing colors with your skin tone, look for fabrics that are the perfect compliment. One trip that typically works with melanin is opting for colors that are the complete opposite of your skin tone. What do I mean? For example, brighter pigments like yellow, red, and orange tend to highlight all varieties of undertones in us brown girls because of the stark contrast to our pigmentations. Jewel tones such as ruby, amethyst, emerald, and sapphire also pick up on our natural brilliance. Simply put, it pops!
The Appropriate Piece
Sure you can wear a bold hue and look stunning, but choosing the appropriate garment for the occasion is vital. Carefully consider the cut of the garment you want to wear. One reason for the pushback with brown girls donning bold colors is wearing them at the wrong time. Context becomes crucial when pairing outfits for a special event. Think about the setting, the venue, even the crowd of people attending. A sheer, flowing lemon meringue dress may not be appropriate when a simple accent clutch or shoe can get the job done. On the occasion when a statement look is necessary then go all out. There is nothing like when I rock my favorite blood orange dress, not only do I feel empowered but I love that my outfit has made a statement without me saying a single word. Talk about bold!
I'll admit that trying new things can be challenging and overwhelming. It’s not easy to step out of your comfort zone and into a vibrant color wheel if you're a black and white kind of girl. Surfing the internet and social platforms will become your best friend, there’s a ton of inspirational photos. Although it takes time, try things on and see how you feel about them. Pay attention to how confident you are while wearing these items. Personally, I’m obsessed with neutrals such as black and olive but once I got a taste for a good bold hue I never went back.
Items with eye-catching tones of color add excitement to your wardrobe and are often what you need to spice things up. Experiment, do your research, and remember, it’s the unlikely colors that look the best. You'll be owning the every-day runway like Lupita in no time.
