Should Our Skin Be Treated Differently?
While you should always CLEANSE, MOISTURIZE and WEAR SUNSCREEN regardless of your skin tone, it is important to note that our skin comes with its own set of unique advantages as well as issues. It is known that we are more likely to suffer skin discoloration (i.e: hyperpigmentation) than any other skin tones. Our ageing process is much slower because our skin's elasticity lasts longer (Fact: Google Gabrielle Union). Darker skin tones also tend to be more oily and acne prone, but must be careful in not using treatment methods that can be drying for the skin or lead to potential discoloration
Melanin besides being a great UV absorbent, can also be unpredictable, exposing us to unique set of problems that other skin types are less likely to suffer from, which include, hyperpigmentation, melasma, vitiligo but also acne, ingrown hairs and keloids.
It is obvious that our skin tone will affect the type of treatment that should be chosen and we should learn to treat our skin differently. What might work on lighter skin tone, will not work on ours because our skin is different and it's time we start treating it like it.
